Core Groups

Weekly; various days, times and locations

Core Groups are small groups of 3-5 students that meet for two hours each week and are led by an adult member of the church. The purpose of Core Groups is to encourage and foster growth in Christ through Bible study, prayer, sharing, and mentoring. This is a wonderful opprtunity to impact young people and be a part of God's work in their lives.

2009-2010 Campus Core Group Leaders: Doug Swiss, Mark Lindley, Chuck Froning, Malcolm Powers, Scott Ellis, Marcia Swiss, Debbie Flanagan, Meg Brown, Erin Wilson, Sandy Talbott, Carol Gottliebsen, and Anne Kloack will meet weekly with university students for Bible study, prayer and discipleship. Please pray for these First Pres members as they minister to our students!

Campus Interns for 2009-2010

photo of Erin Wilson Erin Wilson recently graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, with a degree in communications. She also spent many hours in the dance studio at UW taking ballet and modern dance, and taught fitness classes at the campus recreational center. Prior to college, she lived in the San Francisco Bay area. She has a twin sister who is also one of her best friends. After going to a Young Life camp called Woodleaf in high school, she turned toward seeking God first in her life. At college, she found the college ministry called The Inn, at University Presyterian Church in Seattle, where she was challenged, supported and encouraged in her own faith. This led her to want to be a campus intern. She says: "I want every college student to have the opportunity to find community and to grow in a deeper relationship wth God, the way i did at the Inn."

photo of Scott Ellis Scott Ellis hails from Gig Harbor, Washington, and also graduated from the University of Washington, where he studied Arabic and received a degree in international studies. He was a Young Life leader his first two years of college, then got involved as a student intern in The Inn. Throughout college he also spent time doing youth development with refugees who were being resettled in the greater Seattle area. He has an "incredibly smart" older sister named Tracy who lives in Philadelphia, and two great parents who now live in Manly, Australia. (It's a real place, he says). He is currently practicing how to make igloos so he can survive the Michigan winter.

CAMPUS MINISTRY FALL RETREAT

University students traveled to Timber Wolf Lake October 9-10 for spiritual enrichment, community building, and teaching from Mike Gaffney, Director of the Ascent Network in Seattle.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Whether it's the Pancake Supper, Golf Outing, or another activity, there are numerous opportunities within Campus Ministry for college students and members of our congregation to connect, build relationships, and have a good time! Please stay tuned to First Press and Sunday worship bulletins for events throughout the year.

PRAYER TEAM

We are invited to participate in God's plan and purposes by being attentive to what God is already doing and asking God to do even more. Please commit to praying regularly for students on the UM/Eastern campuses...perhaps the sorority, fraternity, or dorm you lived in during college, or another aspect of university life with which you are connected. Let us ask God who "is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine (Eph. 3:20)" to do just this in and through Campus Ministry at First Pres!
